Neverwinter Nights - Get what you paid for…

Just a rant…

Just prior to the New Year, I purchased a copy of Neverwinter Nights re-published by Heroes. Only 15AUD!!! 20AUD with 25% off at EB Games. Rather a good deal I thought. When I finally got a chance to install it a few days later, the executable, nwmain.exe was complaining that i did not have the “Play Disc” inserted. I checked and tried again. Same thing. Thought it might be a bug. Used the update function of the game… 160+ MB of updates. Fair enough I thought, might explain why it wasn’t working. Probably just a publishing error. Wondering why no one ever tested installing it fresh. Guess it wasn’t the publisher’s job? Not sure…

The next day…

Yes, it took me an entire night to update (at the time, my broadband was at 64k download cap). I was surprised that the update site is still running after so many years. Rather good support team I thought.

I started the up the game. Everything seemed fine. Walked out of the room with my new Level 1 Fighter named Bain. An NPC approached me to talk…. FATAL ERROR!!! Hmm.. odd I thought. I just updated and when I talk to the first person it crashed. Performed a few tests, including running to the next person to talk, not talking to anyone, leaving it on for a while, and randomly doing weird things in the room such as opening drawers and such. I deduced the cause to be the act of conversing.

I googled around, and found the error to most likely be a publishing error of ALL premium versions of the game. The nice people of Bioware was able to provide the missing convo.bif file (154MB download) on their support site for Neverwinter Nights stating in the forums that some kind of publishing error must have occured.
Another day later, I was finally able to play my game. Great game and I recommend to all. I am sure most would have already played it already. Indeed the only reason I have not, was because I was more into the RTS type games at the time.

First Post

Hello everybody…

My first post ever in my first blog ever. I have finally decided to commit to entering articles into my Blog that Clinton has kindly created for me.

I have decided that this blog will focus on 3 things - my opinions on applications, games, and a small part on MTG (Magic, The Gathering). In the midst of these, I may at times recommend applications, and at other times express my criticisms in relation to them.

Well, this ends my first post. Fair well.
