Microformat goodness

I’ve been playing around with a little calendaring application, and I’ve been asked to present my work to a couple of groups. So this post is partly a draft of my presentation, partly documentation of what I did.

google maps killer

I’m pretty critical about Microsofts blah-killer thype apps. (ipod-killer aka Zune. OS X killer aka vista aka vapour ware, etc).

But I just foudn the 3d maps app (http://maps.live.com/).

OMFG!

This thing rocks!

Check out a US city (of course we in Oz don’t get the full effect :( ) and tell me you don’t love this thing.

Povangelist

Part of my new job is to evangelize new technologies.

Does that make me an e-vangelist?

What about a podcasting evangelist… povangelist!

Brilliant!

(I’ll see if they can amend the order for my new business cards :) )

the joy of validation

It’s been bugging me for ages, but the main web page of the ADS site, which apparently I maintain, has refused to validate for ages because of one little flash thingie in it.

I’ve looked at various solutions to this, but have not been satisfied with any of them. But I just found SWFObject: Javascript Flash Player detection and embed script. This little baby is easy to use and doesn’t bloat my code with various browser hacks. A peak at the code shows it hides all the hacks in a separate file. But that’s okay, cause I’ve got nice valid HTML!

It may seem a small thing, but it’s made me happy :)

pingback spam

The spam filters on my blog are working well. But I got my first case of pingback spam the other day. That got right through the filters :(

Things that go bump in the night

I was reading a blog the other day where somebody was talking about playing a game called Werewolf (AKA Mafia).

By the looks of it, it’s been around for a while, but it was new to me :)

It looked interesting. But I don’t often have enough people, sitting in one place, to play.

What’s a geek to do?

I started my own web based version of the game. So if anyone’s interested, drop on by, register, and we’ll get playing. (The game finished, the site is no longer online. ED) If we get too many players, I guess we can always spawn a second game :)

I was *this* close

I was working on a project at work to deploy a calendaring app. Somebody had started work on the project before me and elected to hack Wordpress so that posts could be future dated. I grabbed the RSS feed (with Magpie) and dressed it up in a little CSS to present on the departmental web site. So Wordpress is the admin tool which only the people adding events use/see, and the rest of the world sees the styled feed.

It was almost done. I was *this* close to deploying it. I just needed to work out how to express durations, and figure out why all dates were displayed one hour off there correct time.

Now, today, I discover hCal. My world is shattered.

There’s even a Wordpress plugin, Structured Blogging.

Looks like I’m back to the drawing board. But my calendar app, when deployed, is going to be so much cooler :)

Working with designers

I’ve been doing web sites for some time now. At first, I naively thought my meagre skills with Fireworks and Photoshop would be enough to get me through. In the 90’s they were. But the 90’s were amateur hour for the web.
